When we compared Wix and WordPress, I was looking at advantages and limitations. This time, we will compare WordPress and Squarespace by topic as I don’t want you to read the same thing over and over…
Ease of Use – Squarespace
Squarespace is pretty limited when it comes to content creation, and has all the essentials, which can seem easier for people to grasp. Now when you get assistance from developers, WordPress can be easily taught and coached to achieve the same results. So on this one, Squarespace takes the cake.
Flexibility – WordPress
To use Squarespace you are bound to use their servers, and their export feature is again really limited. On the other hand, WordPress has a lot fo different options for hosting through third party providers and great export features (we’ll read about that later). So, WordPress it is.
Design – WordPress
WordPress has thousands of themes available, Free themes, Freemium Themes, Paid Themes… You have more choices than you can think of, could be overwhelming at times, but you’ll survive. On the other hand, Squarespace only has a few options available and is lagging behind. The main difference is that third party individual an companies design WordPress themes, while in house developers make Squarespace themes.
Features – WordPress
At the time I’m writing this article, there is 53,000+ plugins available for WordPress, all kind of features available and integrations with most third party service providers. You pretty much can integrate anything within wordpress. On the other hand, Squarespace has some very limited integrations available.
E-Commerce – WordPress
WordPress has some great E-commerce solutions available, with Woocommerce leading them all. You can integrate all types of payment gateways. Authorize.net, PayPal, Stripe, Square are all available for Woocommerce. Also you can sell as many products as you want with your normal hosting solution. On the other hand, Squarespace has very limited features on their e-commerce platform. With their personal or professional plans, you can only sell up to 22 products, for anything more they ask you to purchase a more expensive plan. Payments, it accepts Stripe and that’s it. Stripe is available in most countries, but that doesn’t give you a choice of providers.
Data Portability – WordPress
To export a WordPress website is very easy. Having regular backups of your website is also available through plugins. You can always be sure that you will have easy access to your website files and can transfer them to another server with ease. You spend money on a hosting plan, you better be happy with it. Squarespace has a very limited export tool, as we mentioned it earlier. We have used it quite a bit and it didn’t do much for us.
WordPress is far better than Squarespace as a web publishing platform for any kind of website. Squarespace can be an alternative for beginners and small sites that need little functionality. It is also slightly better in ease of use when writing posts. Apart from that, WordPress beats Squarespace in every possible usage scenario. A lot of our clients actually come from that platform and are delighted when we turn them onto WordPress, they see the features of their website jump through the roof.
